Baseball and Softball
Dating back to the 18th century, baseball is an American pastime beloved by many. Here in Massachusetts, our state takes credit for one of the earliest baseball references in the country. Alongside a diary entry in 1786, a city ordinance was documented in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The ordinance of 1791 barred the playing of baseball within 80 yards of the town meeting house due to the glass windows.
Soccer
As one of the oldest sports in history, soccer dates all the way back to 206 B.C.! However, it wasn’t until 1863 that official rules were drawn up for a game held in England. Today, soccer is played by over 250 million athletes globally, with Brazil taking the lead on player numbers.
Lacrosse
Older than baseball, but not as old as soccer, lacrosse dates back to Mesoamerica in the early 17th century. Originally referred to as ‘stickball,’ the game was played by indigenous tribes over the course of several days. With no boundaries and rules beyond not touching the ball with your hands, one can imagine how interesting these matches became.
Field Hockey
As one of the newer games to arrive, field hockey, roots itself into the world of sports during the mid-1800s. In 1901 the sport traveled to the United States, and the United States Field Hockey Association was founded in 1922. Since, both men and women have represented the country in several Olympic Games.
